How to buy solar panels in Wrexham and maintain them

Solar water heating systems, or ‘solar thermal’ systems, use free heat from the sun to warm residential hot water. A standard boiler or immersion heating system can be used to make the water hotter, or to supply hot water when solar energy is not available.

The advantages of solar water heating

Hot water all throughout the year. The equipment operates all year round, though you’ll have to heat up the water further with a boiler or immersion heater in the course of the winter months.
Reduced utility bills. Sun light is free, therefore once you’ve paid for the initial installation your hot water rates will be minimised.
Lower carbon footprint. Solar energy hot water is a green, renewable heating system and could reduce your carbon dioxide emissions.

How do solar water heating systems work?

Solar energy water heating systems use panels, referred to as collectors, installed to your roofing system. These collect heat energy from the sun’s rays and use it to warm up water which in turn is stored in a hot water cylinder. A central heating boiler or immersion heater can be used as an alternative to heat up the water further to reach the temperature you want.

Currently there are 2 types of solar water home heating panels:

1. Evacuated tubes
2. Flat plate collectors, which can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof.
More substantial solar panels can easily also be arranged to offer some contribution to heating up your home at the same time. However, the quantity of heat offered is generally very small and it is not usually considered beneficial.

Is solar water heating right for your household?

Factors to take into consideration

Do you have a sunny place to put solar panels? You’ll need around five square metres of roof space which faces East to West through South and receives direct sunlight for the main part of the day. The panels don’t have to be mounted on a roof however. They can be fixed to a frame on a flat roof or hang from a wall.

Do you have space for a larger, or an extra, hot water cylinder? If a dedicated solar cylinder is not already installed then you will usually need to replace the existing cylinder, or add a dedicated cylinder with a solar heating coil.

Is your current boiler compatible with solar water heating? Most conventional boiler and hot water cylinder systems are compatible with solar water heating. If your boiler is a combination boiler (combi) and you don’t currently have a hot water tank, a solar hot water system may not be compatible.

Solar Heating Maintenance

Routine maintenance costs for solar water heating systems are typically very low. Almost all solar water heating systems we fit come along with a five-year or ten-year warranty and call for little maintenance. Once installed we will leave written details of any routine maintenance checks that you can carry out from time to time to ensure everything is functioning appropriately.

The system also includes a pump, usually these will last around 10 years and we will always check them.

Hard Water – A Solution

Invented in 1903, water softening technology didn’t move into widespread use until the 1920s. The original salt-based technology removed calcium and magnesium from water, eliminating the minerals that left white scale (limescale) on everything.
